DOLLY chats with Kelley Mitchell and Eryn Krueger Mekash, the makeup department heads on Scream Queens, who share their tips for embracing your inner Chanel...
1. What look from the show would best suit a girl’s formal night?
Kelley: It all depends on which character she identifies with. The Chanels have a soft, classic makeup style. Grace and Zayday have their own unique styles.
2. What are the steps to achieving the Chanels' beauty look?
Kelley & Eryn: We place a lot of importance on good skincare. That’s really half the battle. Beyond that find the right foundation for your skin if you need it and play around with everything else.
3. What is the secret to achieving Chanel’s (Emma Roberts’) flawless skin?
Kelley & Eryn: Emma’s skin is amazing. She is a huge fan of Amore Pacific Skincare. She is also great about applying sunscreen. We use Armani foundation on her as well as Colorescience Sunforgettable powder .
4. When Hester made her transition to a Chanel, what changes did you make to her beauty look?
Kelley: Having done Lea’s makeup for the last few seasons of Glee, I wanted to stay away from her Rachel Berry winged eyeliner and nude lips. Knowing we were filming in the New Orleans' heat, we wanted to keep her as easy as possible so we focused on soft, glittery pastel shadows and some great lashes.
5. What is your secret to long-lasting makeup?
Kelley: Always start with a great primer. Depending on your skin type you may need a moisturising or mattifying one. I like Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer with eyeshadow and apply it with an eyeliner brush as eyeliner. It won’t budge all day.
6. Your #1 BEST beauty secret?
Kelley: One of my all-time favourite beauty products is Koh Gen Do's Gommage Gel. It’s a very gentle exfoliant that really works like magic.
7. How do the makeup looks differ for the girls (from Ariana, to Keke, to Emma?)
Eryn: [Showrunner] Ryan Murphy is the person responsible for all the inspiration for the makeup and hair looks. He wanted a very soft, perfect look for the Chanels. He wanted some of the actors to have individual looks like Zayday and Grace.
We wanted everyone to be very polished, but clean, non-heavy makeup. Some of our quirkier sorority pledges wore less makeup according to their character description. We also go off what our Costumer Designer, Lou Eyrich, initially creates. She sets the tone for the show with the colour palette and clothing.
Season 1 of the killer comedy-horror, Scream Queens is out now on DVD!
