Taylor Swift 'Red' — DOLLY review
12:00AM, Nov 14 2012
Taylor Swift is back and true to form, isn't holding back. If her new lyrics (and countless pap shots of her with boys) are anything to go by, chances are she’s experienced a break-up (or two or three) since her last album Speak Now. And she's ready to tell the world about it in her album Red. DOLLY's entertainment editor Jess B takes us through a track by track brief of everyone's new favourite heartbreak playlist.
1. State of Grace
It's got a few more layers than the usual country melodies we've come to know Taylor for. A much more mature sound, pay attention to the lyrics we wonder which boy she's singing about!
The title track, "Red" has a similar feel to her very first debut single "Love Story." Taylor explores every stage of a relationship. That is, what it was like loving him, memorising him, fighting with him, forgetting him and regretting him. This is our tip for her next breakout song.
A slower track that will be perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons!
4. I Knew You Were Trouble
You have all heard this one on the radio and it is another song about lost love. It's upbeat tempo means you should definitely play it loud post-breakup. Sing it with us "I knew you were trouble when you walked in/ so shame on me now/ flew me to places I'd never been till you put me down/now I'm lying on the cold hard ground."
5. All Too Well
This is one of our favourite tracks and serves as a little narrative about heartbreak with some pretty deep words. Lyrics include "'Cause there we are again when I loved you so/ back before you lost the one real thing you've ever known/ it was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well."
It's optimistic, free-spirited and fun! Taylor sings about the awesomeness of being 22-years-old. Shout this one out with your gal pals.
7. I Almost Do
"It takes everything in me/not to call you/ and I wish I could run to you/ and I hope you know that/ every time I don't, I almost do/ I almost do/"
"I bet you think I either moved on or hate you/ cause each time you reach out/ there’s no reply/ I bet it never occurred to you that I can’t hello to you and risk another goodbye/"
8. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
It sold more than 623,000 song downloads in the U.S. in the first week of it's release. It's dominating Australian radio airwaves right this second. Nuff said.
9. Stay Stay Stay
A cute little country song with all the sprinklings of why we love T-Swizzle.
10. The Last Time
On this track, Taylor collaborates with Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. It's a different sound from Taylor but awesome none-the-less. It's great to get a guy perspective in one of her songs.
11. Holy Ground
12. Sad Beautiful Tragic
You know when you meet a guy and fall so head over heels for him only for him to lose interest? Then you have to try and get over him and it takes forever ("Time is taking it's sweet time erasing you/")? Yep, this song encapsulates just that.
13. The Lucky One
14. Everything Has Changed
This song features Ed Sheeran and like most of Ed Sheeran's collaborations with artists, it's sure to be a breakout hit. Written by Taylor and Ed, it's a stunning duet. Ed is touring with Taylor through the U.S. while she promotes this album we can't wait to see some cool vids online!
16. Begin Again
Taylor finishes her break-up themed record with an opportunistic and hopeful track. No matter how bad you feel after a boy hurt you, there is always something more where you least expect it. "I thought all love did was break and burn and end/ but on a Wednesday in a cafe/ I watched it begin again./"
Taylor's new album 'Red' is available in stores and on iTunes now.
