She’s made a name for herself sharing her life on YouTube, but Bethany Mota has revealed in a raw essay in Cosmopolitan US that she’ll be taking a much-needed break from social media for her own health.
With over 10 million subscribers on YouTube and nearly six million on Instagram, Beth got real on the pressures of being so well-known and how it was starting to take over her life.
"I even started to feel guilty if I just went to the movies for fun, like, What could I be doing on social media?... If something was trending or I visited a popular vacation spot, I couldn’t fully enjoy it if I didn’t take a photo and post it online. And if I did take pictures but they weren’t great, I’d be so bummed about it because I felt like it didn’t fit this certain standard for me to post. There would be this lingering feeling, like, Oh, I didn’t get the shot, even if I’d had the best time ever! The truth is, I was never fully present. I wasn’t building bonds with people, and I wasn’t happy."
While she promises fans she isn’t ditching social media for good, she hopes to spend more time being your average gal by hanging out with friends and family rather than spend all her time online.
"I’m not saying I’ll be going dark on social media anytime soon. Again, I love it, and I understand its importance for my career. But every day, It’s important for my emotional well-being that I fit in at least five minutes where I close my eyes and allow myself to be at one with my thoughts. I also do my best to minimize the time I have my phone out when I’m with friends or family, because it starts to consume me and then I stop using all my senses to fully experience what’s happening."
We’ve all felt the need to distance ourselves from the endless scrolling of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, so kudos to Beth for taking the plunge and doing what’s best for her mental well being!
