Despite having millions of legit fans, certain celebs find the hate that comes from having a large social media following can become too much to handle.
So sometimes, they decide they've had enough and sign off for good... only to make a comeback shortly after.
1. Justin Bieber (August 2016)
The Biebs is the latest celeb say buh-bye to his social media accounts. In an effort to stop his fans flinging hate on his new bae, Sofia Richie, Biebs threatened to make his Insta private.
Things got extra heated when ex-bae, Selena Gomez, got involved by commenting on his post, telling him to stop posting pictures of his gf if he doesn’t want the hate. Ouch!
Obvs, the social media universe exploded with Selenators and Beliebers taking sides and in the end, Justin took it a step further than expected and deactivated his Instagram.
2. Miley Cyrus (October 2009)
Despite Miley being insanely active on Twitter and Instagram these days, in October 2009 she announced she was leaving the site, tweeting, “FYI Liam doesn’t have a twttr & he wants ME 2 delete mine w/ gd reason.”
The singer’s 2m fans were quick to say she was leaving the site for a boy, but Miley took to her YouTube channel (RIP Miley & Mandy show) to insist she didn’t quit the site for Liam, but to stop “living for moments” and start “living for people.”
Miley returned to Twitter in 2011 and is as active as ever.
3. Zayn Malik (August 2012)
Officially over all the hate he was receiving, Zayn decided to leave the site and only communicate through the 1D account, saying, “My fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the one direction account, x.”
He did, however, return to Twitter not long after. Maybe the 1D fans should have seen this as a sign that he could quit other things too? Oooh, was that too soon?
4. Rihanna (November 2014)
Back in 2014 Instagram decided to delete RiRi’s account due to a censorship issue. Despite Insta quickly reinstating her access, Ri decided to take a six month hiatus. Thank gawd she’s back though, I don’t know what we’d do without some @badgirlriri in our feeds.
5. Iggy Azalea (March 2015)
On March 5th 2015, with no explanation, Iggy deactivated her Insta account. It was back up and running the next day, but it wasn’t Iggy. Her management team were letting the Azaleans know they would be taking the reigns of all her accounts.
Around the same time she also signed off Twitter for good.
Despite never claiming to “officially” take the back control of her social media, Iggy regularly posts selfies and personal tweets
6. Ed Sheeran (December 2015)
Unlike other celebs, Ed didn’t leave social media because of too much hate. In an Instagram pic posted on December 13th 2015, Ed explained he was stepping away from social media so he could stop “seeing the world through a screen.” Eight months later and that photo still sits at the top of his feed. sob
7. Kanye West (August 2016)
Kanye mysteriously left Twitter earlier this month without warning. Twitter was quick to say it may have just been a technical glitch. However, fans were convinced he deleted it. Whatever the case, it’s not the first time Kanye has decided to say goodbye to the site. In October 2012, he tweeted “be back soon.”
We can’t help but think this is the celebrity equivalent of texting your friend a vague “brb” in the middle of a FB Messenger convo... only never return.
8. Demi Lovato (June 2016)
Demi quit Instagram and Twitter with little to no explanation back in June this year. Judging from her tweets, Dems was sick of getting hate over her outspoken opinions.
Don’t worry though, Dems was back less than 24 hours later.
9. Normani Kordei (August 2016)
Fifth Harmony member, Normani Kordei, announced she'd be taking a break from Twitter after she was cyber-bullied. She's yet to return.
10. Sofia Richie (August 2016)
On the back of all the Bieber drama that has gone down this week, new bae Sofia decided she's also had enough of the hate (or Twitter decided she'd had enough - we're still not sure) and her account was suspended. Remains to be seen how long she'll be gone for.
