Jai Waetford is back on the Aussie music scene with some brand new tunes! DOLLY’s Matthew Galea chatted with the X Factor alum about music inspo, wacky fan encounters and girl goss.
So you’ve got a brand new EP out, tell me a bit about the title track, “Shy”.
"The song is about a girl who makes a guy unable to talk to her and he has become super super, like, not himself and she makes him shy."
Who is your dream collaboration?
"Bruno Mars, he’s a legend. I love his newest song, it’s so clever! I think what he’s done in this generation is so incredible, like bringing back the old school dance moves and funk, its super cool."
What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done?
"Probably bought my own CD for me, which doesn’t sound that crazy but when you think about it, I get thousands of copies a day and a fan just went and bought it for me. Also, I brought a girl up on stage and just asked her to kiss me on the cheek and she hard out kissed me on stage! I was halfway through a song and I was like “uh…” and I just kept singing but I was laughing so hard."
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
"I’ve never thought about it but I don’t really need to. I know what I want to do and I’m sticking to it."
Are you currently seeing anyone?
"No I’m not, I’m single."
What do you look for in a girl?
"With the job I do, they need to be able to adapt to my life, it sounds selfish, but I’m constantly on the road so being happy with me being away is a massive thing. And I want someone funny, boring relationships are dumb, the way I see relationships is like best friends with a different name so someone who I genuinely get along with and makes me smile."
How would you tell a girl you liked her?
"Everyone does it via social media these days but I don’t know, something different. I’ll just tell her straight out “Hey look, I reckon you’re cool and I like you, let’s date!” Done, deal, sealed."
Would you ever date a fan?
"I get asked this all the time and it depends, if it got to the point where I was dating them then I wouldn’t think of them as a fan because you classify fans as people that adore you and admire you in a crazy way, but maybe… it depends."
Who’s your celeb crush?
"Probably Kylie and Kendall Jenner, they’re babes! Come on Kylie, let’s go!"
What does 2015 hold for you?
"More sleep! I’m joking. This year I want to have fun and work hard and achieve big things. Live a little more."
And lastly, do you have a message for our *DOLLY* readers?
"Thanks for the support, keep it up! Keep on keeping on."
