5 #FACTS you need to know about oral sex

Coz we know you were wondering.

By Amber Manto

Giving head, blowjobs, going down… whatever slang you’ve heard before they all mean the same thing: oral sex. Or if you wanna get technical, fellatio.

Yes this can be a pleasurable thing for your guy to experience, and be fun for you too, but there's a few things you should know before you consider actually doing it.

1. Oral sex doesn’t mean safe sex.
Just because he’s not putting it into your va-jay-jay doesn’t mean you’re safe from all the risks that come with getting sexual with someone. It’s still very much possible for you to get an STD on your mouth (and if you have mouth herpes aka a cold sore, that can be transferred onto his penis). Several sexually transmitted diseases including herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, HPV and viral hepatitis can be passed on through oral sex so play it safe and use a condom.

2. His diet plays a part in how his semen tastes

If your bae eats a lot of steak, this will change the taste of his semen (aka cum). If you’re going to swallow - and that’s totally up to you and not a requirement at all - know that if he eats a lot of fruit it’ll taste sweeter, and if he’s big on dairy and meat then it’ll have the opposite effect and taste rather er, funky.

3. It can give you cancer
K, before you start to freak out and vow never to try oral sex ever, the act itself will not give you cancer. However, the human papillomavirus (HPV) can be transferred through oral sex which can potentially cause cancer in the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils - this is known as oropharyngeal cancer. While there are now vaccines available designed to prevent HPV causing cervical cancer it has not been confirmed if this same vaccine will prevent oropharyngeal cancers. So what's the best way to prevent this risk? Practise safe sex by using a condom and limit the amount of sexual partners you have to minimise your risk.

4. Semen has kilojoules
Not enough to make your worry about getting a bit pudgy though; each teaspoon of semen contains roughly 21kJ. To put that in perspective that's about three Tic Tacs. Semen is made up of sperm (obvs) fructose sugar, water, ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C), citric acid, enzymes, protein, phosphate and bicarbonate buffer, and zinc - just in case you were wondering.

5. It’s a (bacteria) jungle down there

Pubic hair and sweaty genitals (guys can get a bit clammy down there) are a breeding ground for bacteria. However, if your bae regularly showers (and we really hope he does) and you use a condom, then you’re taking the right hygiene precautions. On the other side of this equation, your mouth is ALSO filled with bacteria - about 1000-100,000 bacteria live on EACH tooth even if you do practise good oral health. So make sure you're regularly brushing to keep everything as hygienic as it can be.

Now that you know the risks, you can make a responsible decision about whether you wanna take this ~step~ with your bae. While this can be a fun thing to do together, remember that this is an important step in any relationship so shouldn't be made lightly.
