Dear DOLLY DR, I'm 15 and I have really big breasts. They're double D. Will they affect my health? Cath. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and can often be asymmetrical. It's very common when your breasts have just finished growing, or are still growing, to worry a lot about whether they're normal — both in appearance and function. Double D-sized breasts are obviously at the bigger end of the range of normal but there is no reason to worry about the effect on your health. Much more important is you feeling happy and good about your body and looking after it properly. That means eating healthy foods (sometimes large breasts are partly due to being overweight) and exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs and generally leading a healthy lifestyle.

Women with large breasts may find it uncomfortable, however, to play certain sports, and can even get a bit of back strain, depending on their body build. When you are physically active you may want to consider wearing very supportive sports bras or tops. It's also important to learn how to examine your breasts — no matter how big or small — it's part of learning to take care of your health. Your doctor can explain this to you further and also discuss any other worries you might have about your breasts or other aspects of your health.
